There are many scanners out there that scan beautifully. The absolute genious of NeatWorks is the software that reads and compiles your information for tax purposes. If you are self-employed, this is the answer to keeping real-time records for year-end tax reporting. It truly does what it says and extracts the information needed for tax reporting from the receipt and puts it in a spreadsheet. You end up with a scanned copy of the receipt, a running total of your expenses, and an itemized spreadsheet for all expenses. NeatWorks is totally customizable, so you can create as many different files as you would like. I made a personal receipt file for non-tax reporting items so I can quickly find receipts for my personal purchases as well as a business receipt file for year-end tax reporting.

How NeatReciepts Works
NeatScan Technology Using advanced Optical Character Recognition, NeatScan technology (patent pending) extracts key information from your receipts, such as date, amount, payment method, expense category and vendor. If you scan in business cards, NeatScan automatically pulls out information like name, company, address, phone numbers, email address etc.

I bought this scanner less than a year ago. It stopped calibrating after a few months and technical support does not exist (There's a recording that tells you that when you try to call their number).
Scanning is done ONLY through their proprietary program. It's decent if you scan receipts, but worthless for anything else, as the program sorts your "receipts" by vendor and price.
This is "mobile" scanner comes with a strict licencing and activation for each copy. My initial thought was to take it with me as a plug and play scanner whenever I need it. Little did I know, it ended up collecting dust, due to it's software immobility.
I almost never give a one star review, but this time I feel cheated and scammed. This is the worst purchase I have made in years, and the best tip I can give you, is to stay away.
DO NOT BUY v3.0 - it's not current version or upgradeable for free - D Von - USA
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE -- I would suggest that you NOT purchase the NeatReceipts v.3 product. Version 3 is the old software, and the data file is not upgradeable to Windows 7 without a paid upgrade to NeatReceipts v.4 which is their current version software. I have owned the 4.0 version for over a year now, so if someone is still selling v.3 you are getting ripped off. I would reccomend the v.4 product though and will review that separately.

I bought this item a little less than a year ago. It was hard to justify the cost, but the idea sounded great and my receipts / business cards were piling up.
Initial installation wasn't too bad. It wants to run constantly, and if you force it to stop, getting it to go again often means a reboot. If you let it run it hogs memory. Support questions to the company went unanswered.
Scanning wasn't great. I had to rescan several times and it was quite cumbersome to enter data. Basic software programming UX concerns, such as tab order, were completely ignored when they created their software.
I wasn't very impressed and then I upgraded my computer when my old one died. All of my data is backed up, but as my new machine is Windows 7, I can't access it. The company wants me to pay for an entire new copy not just an upgrade. Throughout my transfer of data to my new machine, not a single other piece of software required that I purchase a new set without a discounted price for Windows 7. The company completely blew me off. So, now unless I install on an old XP machine or buy a whole new set, I can't access my dataset. You can bet your sweet bippy this company won't get another penny from me. I will get my old machine running, export the data or print it out, and kiss them goodbye.
In a day and age when customer service is all that sets apart one company from another, this one completely falls down. I saw an ad on a service hiring people to put positive ads up. Though their name was not on it, the ad was for "a scanning product which adds business cards, receipts, and other documents into company software complete with actual scanner". You do the math on the +5 reviews that don't seem to mesh with what the rest of us are writing.
