Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner Review

Pentax has turned this scanner over to BROTHER, and although BROTHER has downloadable drivers available for this wonderful handy scanner, unfortunately none of them are for MACs. In fact, they even advertise it now as not being compatible with MACs.

Well, I beg to differ, because Ladies & Gentlemen, after scouring the internet with many a fail, I just discovered the missing link. My computer hard drive crashed & I needed to find the mac TWAIN driver for the DSmobile 600 again. I was quite angry when even Brother's phone customer service tried to tell me to call Pentax even though Pentax told me to call them. We're the customers, so we're the morons right?

Well moron this: [...]

Mac Peeps - Copy link, Paste in browser & hit enter, Scroll down, Download Twain driver, Open file & Install, aaaannndd DO NOT DELETE THE INSTALLATION FILE; it's just a matter of time before this hole in the web disappears too.

... now if I can just find that pesky calibration card ;)

Good product!! Used it 5 min after getting it. I have only scanned black and white pages in and it works great.

Good product, but I have high standards - Peter Olguin - West Hartford, CT United States
I'll start off by saying that I like this product and would buy it again. Compared to my HP Photosmart scanner, this thing is a speed demon. And the quality is good enough for archiving receipts, notes, and other miscellany I want to keep a record of but don't need the image quality to be stellar. And the footprint is tiny.

That said, after having used it a while, there are some things that I would love to see improved.

When I feed in paper that has been folded, the speed varies when the paper hits the fold, causing the image to be distorted.

I would love to be able to do a some minimal post-scanning manipulation before saving a multi-page document. If I feed in five pages and accidentally mix up pages 3 and 4, I need to rescan the entire document to put the pages in the right order. Also, if the size of the scan area is larger than the paper, the scan displays a dark, black border, which I would like to eliminate. The border is not a problem if I am only filing the document electronically, but it is a real ink-waster if I have to print it later on.

It would also be great if the software could automatically detect the paper edge. Instead, if I have an odd-sized piece of paper, such as a receipt or half sheet of letter-sized paper, I have to manually adjust the size, otherwise I get the aforementioned black border.

Too slow - Mdking -
Very cute, taking about 30sec to scan one page. Very hard to scan a document with multiple pages.

Longevity - J. Hayden - USA
Mine was great up until the point where it stopped working, 1.5 years into owning it. At first I thought it was an OS/driver issue, but I confirmed that it is simply broken. I seriously doubt I will buy from Brother/Pentax again.
